Uniform Skirts ➡️ Self Care

school self care uniform Sep 06, 2024

Anyone who has taken girls for uniforms should understand the need for self care. Actually taking boys for pants is pretty similar. A (major) difference with girls is that uniforms have their own secret language - it is especially confusing…

Did you know that a size with AAAA means that the skirt is shorter than AA? And 12K4 and a size 10A is the same length and 14ED is just a tad shorter than 14E. But that tad makes all the difference in high school apparently. And that there are two size 12’s. Don’t confuse the 12 junior size and the 12 child size. I did that.  Not cool. And who knew that elastics weren’t so cool in the younger girls eyes. I would have thought elastics are amazing and give room for lunch options 😅.

Honestly, I am so incredibly grateful to not need to fit into those skirts nowadays and I daven - a real tefilla - that each girl feels amazing in her new uniform, regardless of the size that no one really understands anyway…

So, who doesn’t need a break after that experience? And in general - I’ve come across this trend of mothers not taking their self - care seriously enough.

A client asked me this week: “Is it OK to be selfish sometimes? And just take care of myself? Have a little “me” time? Why do I feel so guilty about the time I spend on/with myself? The other night I didn’t go to my sister’s brother in law’s sister’s wedding, and I was made to feel so guilty when all I needed was a little time to myself.”

It was a great conversation about what is selfish vs. what is healthy self care. She told me that her whole life she was given so much responsibility, that the thought of taking some time for herself seems so ‘selfish.’ She said she didn’t remember her mother ever taking such time for herself, and therefore never really looked at it as acceptable. In fact, she felt genuinely selfish for taking some time for herself. When it’s a quiet moment, she looks to fill it with things for others and it wouldn’t occur to her to carve out time and spend it on doing something special for herself.

Maybe I take this self care thing too seriously, but I am a huge believer in it. Adults need self care. Adults need time to take care of their physical, emotional and mental health.
